Here in Kirchberg near Kitzbühel, in the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps, all you have to do is open the front door and set off - there are around 800 kilometres of mountain bike and cycle paths to discover. After the tour, you can enjoy the peaks from a different perspective while sweating it out in the alpine spa. This time with your legs up. When you consider that I grew up on the Arlberg, in the "high alpine" mountains and had very little to do with mountain biking, it's hard to believe that I'm now a passionate bike guide in my new home.
When my mum-in-law asked me five years ago whether I would like to take part in the bike guide training programme for Sportalm, I had my doubts.
Back then - mountain biking yes, but technique, trails, jumps, roots and the like? - But well, what can I say, the adventure appealed to me and so I borrowed a "good bike" from Kurt at the Bikeacademy and set off for the Bregenzerwald.
It really wasn't an easy endeavour, and to be honest, I certainly underestimated the whole thing a bit. After a few days and evenings, when I returned to the hotel pretty tired, I had my bike guide training in the bag and was naturally very proud - from zero to one hundred! Giving up was never an option.
The following summer, I couldn't hold on any longer and we got an addition to the family - the Cannondale F29. As I had no idea about the Tyrolean lowlands or the mountains, which is not the best thing for a bike guide, I spent countless hours in the Kitzbühel Alps, looking for tours and trails and couldn't finish, there was so much to experience.
Now, five years later and with countless bike kilometres under my belt, I know the Kitzbühel Alps and I'm sure I have the right tour for each of you so that you too can enjoy THE feeling that I experienced for the first time in the summer of 2012.
