Corno di Tres

The Corno di Tres single trail is more than just a trail - it is a full-blown South Tyrolean trail tour. Experienced trail bikers will love the technical challenge on the towel-wide paths high above Tramin - South Tyrolean Unterland and the marvellous Lake Kaltern. After the sweat-inducing ride over 13 kilometres of secluded nature trails, a dip in the lake awaits as a reward. What more could a biker's heart desire?

Corno di Tres

The view of Lake Kaltern from Tramin & the South Tyrolean lowlands is simply breathtakingly beautiful. We have been coming here for mountain biking for many years - we usually start with a ride up to the Mendel Pass and a trail tour over Monte Roen back down to the valley. But this time, hotelier and MTB expert Armin Pomella from the Bikehotel Traminerhof in Tramin has promised us something even better: the epic tour to Corno di Tres. So off we go ...

From the Höllentalbach stream to the mountain range

Armin didn't promise us too much. The start of the exceptional tour is immediately sweat-inducing. And it stays that way for quite a while. From Tramin, we follow the Höllentalbach stream and then cross in the direction of Graun. From here, the ascent leads us upwards, bend by bend. We get closer and closer to the mountain range that we already know from Monte Roen further north. After many kilometres uphill on forest roads, we are greeted by a wonderful panorama and an almost untouched natural landscape. The view is impressive - the Dolomites on one side, the Brenta region on the other.

We need to catch our breath and take in the landscape. Especially the peace and solitude that comes with it. While there are always people between the Mendel Pass and Monte Roen, we are on the quieter part of the ridge. And enjoy it while we let our gaze wander and gather our strength for the descent.

Intoxicating views

We now follow narrow paths along the ridge to Malga Rodezza. The small hut is open in summer and welcomes us with delicious Italian food. And a perfectly brewed espresso, typical of the country. Freshly fortified, we decide to take the short detour to the Corno di Tres:

  • The Corno di Tres marks the border between South Tyrol and Trentino
  • It is a perfect vantage point above the tree line
  • Fantastic views of the vineyards of the lowlands, the apple orchards in Val di Non and the imposing Dolomite peaks

Lonely nature trails

From the Tresner Horn, we descend to the Fenner Joch and are already in the singletrail fun of this tour. Because from here it's all downhill - apart from small climbs in the opposite direction. And that on towel-wide paths, which are always exposed at the foot of massive cliff edges. Despite our concentrated faces, we can't help but grin. This is exactly how we imagine a successful trail tour. Natural terrain, tranquillity and fantastic views. Even if we can only perceive these to a limited extent at the moment - our focus is clearly on the trail and the riding pleasure.

"Despite our concentrated faces, we can't help but grin. This is exactly how we imagine a successful trail tour."

We cross from Hofstatt to Graun as far as the Lochweg. We ride downhill and return to Tramin via the technical course. A whole 13 kilometres of lonely nature trails lie behind us as we reach the hotel terrace and toast with a glass of wine. We are amazed that even here, where we thought we knew everything, there are still undiscovered gems. And the technical course at the end of the tour also impressed us once again.

So we sit down with Armin for an aperitif, enjoy the South Tyrolean sun on our faces and look at the map for the next day. Maybe we'll make another new discovery in Tramin & the South Tyrolean lowlands...
